Patron Point growth set to continue with key appointments

(January 14, 2020). Patron Point announced the appointments of Brendan Pearce and Nigel Wheeldon who join the company as Business Development Directors to spearhead growth. The appointments come on the back of another very strong year in which the company has again doubled in size. They both join from collectionHQ, which was acquired by Baker & Taylor in 2011, where they were pivotal to the international growth and commercial success of the business. Prior to collectionHQ, they both had success in software sales roles around the world and bring solid experience and proven formula to Patron Point's plans for 2020 and beyond.

EBSCO Information Services Awards Five Scholarships for Librarians to Attend the 2020 ALA Midwinter Meeting

EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) has awarded five librarians, who are all first-time attendees, $1,500 scholarships to attend the 2020 ALA Midwinter Meeting, January 24th-28th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The scholarships are co-sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA). The scholarship recipients will be honored by EBSCO and ALA representatives at a breakfast during the conference.

Four Innovative solutions earn Platinum Distinction in 2020 Modern Library Awards

Innovative has earned platinum awards for four products – Polaris Leap Web Application, Innovative Resource Sharing (INN-Reach), Mobile Worklists and MyLibrary! – from LibraryWorks' sixth annual 2020 Modern Library Awards (MLAs). LibraryWorks created the MLAs to recognize the top products and services in the industry, evaluated on criteria including functionality, value and customer service. This year, product submissions were sent to more than 80,000 librarians for scoring.

OCLC awarded Mellon Foundation grant to develop infrastructure to support linked data management initiatives

(January 9, 2020). OCLC has been awarded a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to develop a shared “Entity Management Infrastructure” that will support linked data management initiatives underway in the library and scholarly communications community. When complete, this infrastructure will be jointly curated by the community and OCLC, and will ultimately make scholarly materials more connected and discoverable on the web.

ProQuest closes on previously announced sale of its information and learning segment to Cambridge information group

(January 9, 2020). ProQuest Company reported that it has closed on its previously announced transaction with Cambridge Information Group (CIG), under which CIG has acquired its ProQuest Information and Learning segment for approximately $222 million. CIG will combine its Bethesda, Maryland-based CSA subsidiary with Ann Arbor, Michigan-based ProQuest Information and Learning to create a new, privately held independent company, ProQuest-CSA LLC.

Public Libraries Reach Record-High Ebook and Audiobook Usage in 2019

Due to their creative efforts in curation, managing multiple lending models and engaging patrons, librarians helped drive public library circulation of digital books to record highs in 2019. Libraries and schools around the world enabled their patrons and students to check out 326 million ebooks, audiobooks and digital magazines in the past 12 months, a 20% increase over the previous year. Publishers and authors benefited from the library's role as valued discovery channel which resulted in record library sales of digital titles across all genres for all audiences. This data was reported by Rakuten OverDrive, the leading digital reading platform for over 43,000 libraries and schools worldwide.

UC selects Ex Libris for Systemwide ILS

(January 6, 2020). The University of California (UC) Libraries have selected the Ex Libris Alma and Primo services to deploy the Systemwide Integrated Library System (SILS). The Council of University Librarians (CoUL) made this decision following the SILS Request for Proposal and careful consideration of the libraries' goals and requirements for a shared solution. We have reached this important project milestone thanks to the hard work and expertise of many; phase 3 involved over sixty project cohort members and extensive, systemwide consultation and review.
