UNSILO AI in Academic Publishing Survey released

(November 1, 2019). UNSILO has released the results of a survey on AI usage in academic publishing. How is it used? What factors impede its adoption? More than 3,000 new academic journal articles are published every day, and yet many of the tools for processing content through the academic workflow are frequently very manually based. The UNSILO survey, with publishers and other stakeholders in the scholarly workflow, was done between June and September 2019. The results were presented at a panel session at the Frankfurt Book Fair, chaired by Toby Green, former head of publishing at OECD.

NISO Releases Draft FASTEN Recommended Practice for Public Comment

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) seeks comments on a new draft Recommended Practice pertaining to the modernization of library-vendor technical interoperability using RESTful web service application programming interfaces (APIs) and standard mobile application intent calls. In the interest of streamlining information transfer between vendor and library systems, the scope of the draft FASTEN Recommended Practice touches on areas such as login/authentication, account information, availability, checkout, streaming options, and more. FASTEN is the acronym used for this initiative, more formally titled as the Flexible API Standard for E-Content NISO.

Ex Libris Alma and Primo Implementations, the first in Japan, go live at Keio University and Waseda University

Ex Libris announced that the consortium formed by Japan's Keio University and Waseda University has gone live with the Ex Libris Alma library services platform and the Ex Libris Primo discovery and delivery solution. Elsevier Launches the Research Data Management Librarian Academy

Elsevier, a global information analytics business specializing in science and health, today announced the launch of the Research Data Management Librarian Academy (RDMLA), an online program created by a team of expert librarians in the Northeastern United States.The RDMLA is intended primarily for librarians but is also applicable for researchers. The program consists of eight units, which can be taken in sequence or at the user's choice separately. Each unit takes an average of an hour to complete and consists of videos, slides, demonstrations, reading resources and self-assessments. The program is geared for the practicing librarian who wants to learn about research data management (RDM) but may be time-crunched and not able to leave work to obtain formal training.

ALA denounces Amazon, Macmillan in response to Congressional inquiry on competition in digital markets

Current practices by content publishers and distributors in digital markets limit libraries' ability to deliver core services, according to a new report publicly released today by the American Library Association (ALA). Submitted in response to an inquiry from the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law, ALA's report underscores practices by companies like Amazon and Macmillan Publishers that threaten Americans' right to read what and how they choose and imperil other fundamental First Amendment freedoms. The report urges lawmakers to curb anti-competitive practices of digital market actors.

The State of Open Data 2019 – Global Attitudes towards Open Data

(October 25, 2019). Figshare, the online digital repository for academic research, launched its annual report The State of Open Data 2019, to coincide with global celebrations around Open Access Week. The report is the fourth in the series and includes survey results and a collection of articles from global industry experts, as well as a foreword from Paul Ayris, Pro-Vice-Provost (UCL Library Services). The State of Open Data is now the longest running longitudinal study on the subject, which was created in 2016 to examine attitudes and experiences of researchers working with open data – sharing it, reusing it, and redistributing it.

Highland Community College joins NEKLS and chooses ByWater Solutions' Koha support

ByWater Solutions, an open source community contributor and America's forefront provider of Koha support, announced today that the Highland Community College has joined NEXT Shared Regional Catalog with Northeast Kansas Library System (NEKLS). ByWater completed the transition of the libraries' 13,000 plus holdings from TLC library solutions and is providing ongoing support services to the library.

Wayne and Pike County Libraries migrate to Evergreen with the PaILS/SPARK Consortium

(October 22, 2019). Equinox welcomed Wayne and Pike County Libraries to Evergreen with their successful migrations to the Pennsylvania Integrated Library System (PaILS) SPARK Consortium. Wayne and Pike County Libraries' move will support 37,059 patrons. The migration included a total of 118,987 bibliographic records. Services provided by Equinox included project management and Evergreen software configuration. Data extraction and bibliographic deduplication were completed as part of their migration encompassing item, patron, and transaction records.

SAGE announces new open access publishing agreement with UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries

(October 22, 2019). SAGE Publishing announces an open access pilot program with the University Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Beginning in 2020, the program will grant UNC-Chapel Hill access to SAGE Journals and provide funding to cover article publishing fees for University researchers to make their SAGE research articles fully open access.
